About This Spot

Stepping up to Lava Thai Food feels like discovering a little gem tucked quietly alongside the road in Keaau. The open-air setup invites a laid-back rhythm, with simple picnic tables shaded by an awning—just enough shelter to feel at ease while still connected to the gentle island breeze and the casual movement of locals stopping by. Here, there’s no rush; the pace is calm and unpretentious, a humble backdrop to something much richer unfolding on the plate.

This spot is far from a typical sit-down restaurant—it feels more like a welcoming neighborhood nook where genuinely fresh ingredients become the center of attention. You’ll notice the care put into every dish, from the bright and tender mango sticky rice to the lively, fragrant notes carried in a bowl of green curry or the crisp, toasted textures of chicken tempura. The food mirrors the spirit of the place: thoughtfully prepared, authentic, and humble without trying to be anything other than good Thai food served with kindness and warmth.

There’s a genuine human moment here too. The staff, approachable and friendly, take their time preparing your meal, inviting a sense of patience that feels rare and refreshing. It’s a place where the effort behind each dish quietly shows itself, whether in the precise cut of fresh mango or the balanced layers of spices in a papaya salad that makes you pause and savor.

Though the setting is modest, the atmosphere is quietly inviting—ideal for those who appreciate food that tells a story through its layers of flavor rather than its setting. Eating here means tapping into a community rhythm where food and connection come first, under the Hawaiian sky and the gentle hum of everyday island life.

Such kind staff. The papaya salad and green curry is a must. They are authentic and really friendly. I would say get there early when they open and be patient because everything is made fresh to order.

This "Pop Up" is a walk up Food stand open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. It does have outside picnic tables under an awning. While the location and building is minimalistic, the food is far from that. This is some of the best Thai food found on the island. They have a great selection of the usual Thai food, and everything I've tried has been fantastic. They give you a very generous portion and the prices are very reasonable (for Hawai'i) fir the quality and quantity. Definitely recommend this place

Friendly staff, fresh delicious food every time. Love when we go here. Also if your in the market for a plant they sell some on the side. I got myself a money plant which came in a beautiful pot. Would recommend the pad thai, papaya salad and kids chicken.also if you'd like to eat on location they provided a shelter and seating.

Fast service. Cute open air restaurant with a few tables under cover. Great flavors, can get mild, medium or spicy. Fresh ingredients! Watched them cut my mango for mango/ sticky rice.

The food was so good, I forgot to take a photo of it! Wonderful papaya salad, so yummy!!! - got it medium spice, should have asked for hotter. Green curry was delicious. It’s roadside so the atmosphere isn’t the greatest. But tables are clean and service was great! We’ll be coming back during our trip!

Living in HPP, I was curious about this place and decided to try it out… and was it worth it—YES! The ladies are super sweet and friendly and the prices are cheap and affordable for the amount of food and service they give you. Give this place a try—the food is freshly made and you can definitely tell that veggies are fresh and crisp as well. :)

Took the other reviewers advice and got the mango sticky rice. So so so good. We also had a tofu green curry which was absolutely delicious. Highly recommend!

Delicious food and warm hospitality...what more could you ask for??? I'm seriously at a loss for words to describe how GOOD their food is. Hands down the best on the east side...maybe the best on the island! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
